About us

Project 214 was founded with a deep commitment to education equity and social change. Named in honor of our founder Sofia’s first classroom—Room 214—our nonprofit was born out of the urgent need to address the systemic barriers affecting students in underserved communities. Witnessing the school-to-prison pipeline, young parents without registered addresses, and the devastating impact of gang and gun violence on her students, Sofia knew she had to take action.

Together with a dedicated team, Project 214 works to promote education, provide essential resources, and drive meaningful change for teachers and students both locally and internationally. Through strategic advocacy, community-driven initiatives, and innovative programs, we strive to ensure that every student—regardless of their circumstances—has access to the quality education they deserve.

One of our most impactful initiatives, Her Turn, has empowered young girls by providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities to break cycles of inequity. As we continue to grow, Project 214 aims to be a leading voice in the nonprofit sector, securing funding and amplifying the voices of educators and students who lack access to critical resources.

At Project 214, we believe education is a right, not a privilege. We are here to challenge the status quo and create pathways for a brighter, more just future.

LULAC & P214

The LULAC Council 5238 Illinois Education Council is welcoming Project 214 as a new initiative under its leadership. This is not a collaboration or partnership—it is a fully integrated initiative focused on one purpose: to provide scholarships for Latino students and advance the Latino community through education. Project 214 will now operate solely within the Council’s mission to expand opportunity, cultivate talent, and invest in the next generation of Latino leaders.

With Sofia Gonzalez serving as Vice President for K–12 Education on this Council, the launch of this new initiative continues her steadfast leadership to amplify and elevate Latino students across Illinois—ensuring their voices are heard, their goals are supported, and their futures are bright.
